单词本：plunge

还是在组织行为学一书(Organizational Behavior 2005)中看到。看了两个星期了，已经看到倒数第二章，培养组织文化。

这里引用了一个TDIndustries 的案例，引出企业文化的重要性。要了解一个组织的灵魂的话：

To understand the soul of an organization requires plunging below the charts, financial numbers, machines, and buildings into the world of organizational culture.

这里，作者用了 plunge 一词，意思是纵身跳下。其实，仔细观察，可以发现，这个词跟 plumb 有些相似。我们之前在《单词本： aplomb 》学到过，aplomb 源自 plumb 铅锤。拉丁语 plumbum，也是铅的元素名。

我们知道，语言的演进都是先实物，后抽象。先具体，后概念的。plumbum 铅，很重，就会快速落下，所以就由铅引申为重，由重引申为俯冲。

to plunge into the river. 纵身跳进河里。

由俯冲引申为陷入。

the country plunged into chaos. 这个国家陷入混乱。

还有股票价格暴跌。a plunge in share prices. 注意，这里 plunge 已经变成名词了。

它还能当形容词a plunging neckline很低的领口，也就是深 V 字领。法语叫un dé collet é plongeant.
