单词本：propensity

这几天一直在陆陆续续看信息安全标准，在安全产品开发过程要求这个标准分册 (International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) 2009) 介绍什么是 Banned function:

Banned function: software method that is no longer recommended to be used in software because more secure versions exist with less propensity for misuse

这里 propensity 是习性、本性、倾向的名词意思。比如 a propensity for violence 暴力倾向 (Apple Dictionary 2024)。

从词源上看，这个词有 pro 向前、向下以及 pendere悬挂组成。这就好像是天平的两端，如果，你就是喜欢某一端，就会在上面悬挂重物。也就是一种倾向性。

还有很多源自 pendere 的单词，比如

• append 附加（额外挂上去）
• depend 依靠（挂在下面）
• suspend 悬挂、挂起、暂停（从下挂上去）
